Canadian Pacific Railway recently donated $24,000 to the Vancouver Public Library Foundation to help preserve a collection of historic CPR photos.

The library plans to use the funds to digitize more than 1,500 CPR-related images from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, including photographs of tracks being laid, and locomotives, bridges, stations and railroad personnel. Expected to take six months to complete, the digitization process involves electronically scanning and storing the images, and entering relevant historical information into a database.

"When our company was made aware that the images were in a very fragile state, we made a decision to provide the necessary funds to assist Vancouver Public Library in ensuring their preservation for future generations to appreciate and utilize for research," said CPR Vice President Paul Clark in a prepared statement.
