General Motors Corp.'s Electro-Motive Division (EMD) recently delivered the 100th Class 66 freight locomotive to the United Kingdom's Freightliner Group Ltd. as part of an eight-unit order.

Since 1999, EMD has delivered 103 Class 66 units to Freightliner, which plans to use the eight locomotives on its intermodal and heavy-haul networks. The company operates more than 100 trains daily to move coal, cement, autos and petrochemicals, and moves more than 1 million containers annually.

The 3,000-horsepower diesel-electric Class 66 is designed to operate on different electrification systems and in non-electrified territory. More than 400 of the locomotives — classified by EMD as JT42CWRs but known throughout the U.K. as Class 66s — are now in service in the U.K. and western Europe, according to a prepared statement.

Last month, GM reached an agreement to sell EMD to an investor group led by Greenbriar Equity Group L.L.C. and Berkshire Partners L.L.C. The deal is expected to close during the first quarter.
