The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) recently named Daniel Lafreniere manager of radio spectrum to succeed Jacques Darrah, who retired.

Lafreniere has 16 years' experience in government and rail industry communications.

The spectrum contains radio frequencies assigned to Canadian railroads for train operations and network management, and rail shippers for shipment tracing. RAC manages the radio spectrum on behalf of its 60 members under a contract with Industry Canada, which in 2000 streamlined 4,900 individual radio licenses to one single, nationwide authorization under Canada's radio communication act.

The Association of American Railroads has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to similarly streamline radio licensing in the United States, RAC officials said in a prepared statement.
