Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Last year, Kansas City Southern began publishing rates for shippers and interline partners after launching the first component of its Revenue Management System (RMS) pricing application. Now, the railroad is preparing to start a multi-phased roll out of additional RMS applications.
To be launched in the second quarter and fully implemented in the fourth quarter, the phases will create a single pricing information repository, improve market intelligence and make pricing information more accurate.
Under the first “Automatic Rating” phase, the railroad will match a waybill to a line-haul rate in the new pricing repository. KCS will first roll out the application to it forest products group, followed by the intermodal, automotive, chemicals, petroleum, agriculture and minerals groups.
Under additional phases, KCS plans to enhance RMS’ revenue waybill and rating processes, and add processes for managing extra services and ancillary charges.
"With this RMS application, the marketing department will have more accountability for pricing from start to finish," said Mike Bilovesky, KCS vice president of sales and marketing, agriculture and minerals business unit, in a prepared statement.
