Last week, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. announced its St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad (SLR) and Chemin de fer St. Laurent & Atlantique (SLQ) subsidiaries have been certified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program partners.

A voluntary program, C-TPAT encourages businesses to ensure the integrity of their security practices and communicate security guidelines to supply-chain business partners. The program requires participants to analyze all areas of security, such as documents, information systems, employee and contractor identification, equipment and facilities.

“We see certification as a necessity in being a cross-border carrier, and the C-TPAT objectives are consistent with our own,” said SLQ and SLR President Mario Brault in a prepared statement.

SLR and SLQ operate 260 track miles from St. Rosalie, Quebec, to Portland, Maine, and SLR operates a 35-acre intermodal terminal in Auburn, Maine. The sister railroads move international containers from the ports of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, to New England via connections with Canadian National Railway Co. and Norfolk Southern Railway.

"We are excited about … the possibilities of delivering new [double-stack container] service from Prince Rupert, B.C., with CN later this year,” said SLR Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ed Foley.
