The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently awarded ENSCO Inc. a five-year, $67 million contract to support the agency’s Automated Track Inspection Program (ATIP).

ENSCO will operate and maintain the FRA’s three track geometry cars, which include a self-propelled car and high-speed car designed to survey track at speeds up to 125 mph. Under a separate contract, ENSCO, Plasser American Corp. and Colorado Railcar Manufacturing L.L.C. built the cars and delivered the vehicles to the FRA earlier this year.

Administered by the FRA Office of Safety Assurance and Compliance, ATIP helps FRA inspectors determine the locations and conditions for track inspections. Under the program, inspectors use automated vehicles to examine railroads’ track.
