For the fourth-consecutive fiscal year, New Jersey Transit has posted record ridership. The agency recorded 250.9 million trips on its heavy- and light-rail, and bus systems in FY2007, up 4.1 percent compared with FY2006, according to preliminary data.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, NJ Transit registered a total of 73 million passenger trips on its heavy-rail system, a 6 percent increase compared with FY2006’s previous record of 68.8 million passenger trips. Ridership rose 6 percent during peak periods, 5 percent during off-peak periods and 7 percent on weekends.

Light-rail ridership rose 22.4 percent to 18.8 million passenger trips compared with last year’s record of 15.4 million passenger trips. In February 2006, NJ Transit opened two new stations along the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line and in July 2006, the agency launched service on a Newark Light Rail extension to Broad Street Station.
