In fiscal-year 2006, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) carried a record 98.5 million passengers — half a million more riders than in 1999, when the previous record was set.
During the fiscal year, which ended Sept. 31, the agency carried 5.5 million more passengers on its light-rail and bus systems than originally projected and 7.2 million more riders than the same 2005 period.
METRO currently is working to expand its 7.5-mile light-rail system, which opened in January 2004.
