GO Transit recently completed a $14.2 million train storage facility in Toronto’s Don Yard.

Formerly a freight handling yard, Don Yard was rebuilt to accommodate longer GO trains and allow access for light cleaning and maintenance on board parked trains during the day. Located just east of Union Station, the new facility enables GO to hold 10 more trains downtown, which will eliminate 100 miles per day or 24,800 miles per year of train travel, GO Transit says. Storing the trains near Union Station also reduces the amount of train handling on busier west-end tracks.

“Having this additional capacity in the downtown core will make for a more reliable afternoon commute and allow us to operate more efficiently,” said GO Transit Chairman Peter Smith in a prepared statement.

The Canadian government contributed $4.7 million to the project; the Ontario government $4.7 million; and local municipalities, the remainder.

The Don Yard project is part of the GO Transit Rail Improvement Program (GO TRIP), a $945.2 million expansion initiative funded by the Government of Canada, Province of Ontario and municipalities through the Canada-Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Fund.
