Yesterday, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) board selected Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects/Hines to design and develop the new Transbay Transit Center and Transit Tower in downtown San Francisco.

Last week, the board’s “design and development jury” — a panel comprising design, planning, engineering, transit and real estate development professionals — had recommended the Pelli/Hines team to design the center, which will house nine transportation systems under one roof: AC Transit, Bay Area Rapid Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, SanMateo County Transit District, San Francisco Municipal Railway, Western Contra Costa Transit Authority and a future California high-speed rail system.

The TJPA board envisions the Transbay Transit Center and Transit Tower, which will feature 1 million square feet of transit and public-area space, as the “Grand Central of the West.” The area surrounding the center also will be redeveloped to include housing and retail.
