Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd. and Electronic Data Systems Corp. (EDS) recently obtained a 2006 Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Breakthrough Award for their jointly developed Oyster® smart card. Presented during the RFID Networking Forum held earlier this month in London, the awards recognize companies’ achievements in employing RFID technology.

Cubic and EDS developed the Oyster card under a 1998 contract awarded by Transport for London. Launched at 2003’s end, the Oyster card is a rechargeable, reusable smart card riders use to pay for all London public transportation modes. Travelers can pre-pay for tickets for any transportation mode online, or at stations or London rail ticket offices. A central database collects and maintains cardholder and trip data.
