Transport Canada to fund Quebec North Shore passenger-line safety improvements

Transport Canada plans to provide $150,000 for safety-related work on Quebec North Shore and Labrador’s (QNS&L) passenger-rail line in Schefferville, Quebec.

The project includes replacing ties along QNS&L’s main track in the Schefferville yard.

Canada’s government recently approved a contribution agreement providing $1.33 million to ensure continued passenger-rail service between Sept-lles, Schefferville and Labrador City until November 2003. Transport Canada currently is negotiating to extend the agreement.

Rail is the only surface transportation mode serving Schefferville. Transport Canada is seeking a third party to operate passenger- and freight-rail service to Schefferville, according to a prepared statement.
