Amtrak's Capitol Corridor trains to gain wireless Web access

Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) recently began a three-month wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) trial with PointShot Wireless to provide RailPoint™ wireless Internet access on Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor service in California.

Installed on one car, the program will cycle through other trains within the system during the next year, enabling CCJPA officials to gauge demand and determine the feasibility of expanding the program, according to a prepared statement. The Capitol Corridor is the first U.S. intercity rail operator to install the system, Point Shot Wireless officials said.

Passengers can use a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or handheld computer to access the service.

By the end of the trial, CCJPA expects to develop a proposal to equip all corridor trains with Wi-Fi.
