Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) recently approved a $192.5 million contract to rehabilitate a nine-mile section of the Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line.

The project includes rehabilitating substations to improve traction power, and completing special track and signal work along the line between Cermak-Chinatown and 95th Street. At seven stations, the authority plans to replace escalators, platform canopies, lighting, floor finishes, sidewalks and elevators.

Joint venture Kiewit/Reyes was awarded the contract. Kiewit Western Co., which has 80 percent ownership in the joint venture, serves as general contractor. Reyes Group Ltd. will handle concrete, underground and construction management.

The line’s rehabilitation began last spring under a separate $4.5 million contract to renovate bus bridges and turnarounds. The entire project is scheduled for completion in fall 2006.

Meanwhile, on Oct. 6, CTA broke ground on a 117-car, 24-hour Green Line Garfield Boulevard Park & Ride facility. The $935,000 project includes new lighting, canopies, bike racks, landscaping and fencing. The authority also plans to build a new entrance between the station and parking lot.

The project is expected to be complete in spring 2004.
