3PL helps relieve produce growers' transportation headaches

Agriculture trade association Western Growers (WG) recently partnered with third-party logistics firm C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (CHRW) to customize fresh produce transportation for members.

CHRW will tailor transportation — including rail, truck, intermodal, air and ocean-going moves — for each shipper to reduce transportation costs and prevent refrigerated equipment shortages. The 3PL also will provide WG members a dedicated transportation specialist team and toll-free phone line available 24/7.

“In many cases, [members] felt that rate increases and equipment shortages during the past few years had reached a critical stage that was imperiling their businesses,” said WG Executive Director Matt McInerney in a prepared statement.

Established in 1926, WG represents the interests of companies that grow, pack and ship fresh produce in California and Arizona. Members produce about half of the nation’s fresh fruits, nuts and vegetables.
