A railroad first: UP receives ACC's Responsible Care certification

Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad announced it became the first railroad to be certified under the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® program.

UP received dual certification for establishing and managing a Responsible Care program, and achieving International Organization for Standardization’s 14001 standards.

Auditing firm representatives visited UP facilities, and interviewed managers and employees before considering certification. The firm will conduct compliance audits every six months.

“Our Responsible Care team has been working on this project for more than a year,” said Lou Wagner, UP general director of chemical transportation safety, in a prepared statement.

Of the ACC’s 222 member and associate companies, only 16 have obtained Responsible Care and ISO 14001 certification. In 1995, UP became the ACC’s first railroad member after the council opened membership to companies that handle chemicals.

Developed by the chemical industry, Responsible Care is a continuous improvement program under which participants develop methods to manage and improve safety, health, environmental and security processes.
