Mexican railroads originated an average of 19,160 carloads per week during July, down 11.1 percent from July 2019 and down 6.2 percent from June 2020, according to the Association of American Railroads' (AAR) most recent Rail Time Indicators report.
The motor vehicles and parts category — which accounted for 22 percent of Mexican carloads in July — also was down 11.1 percent during the month compared with the same period a year ago, according to the report.
Other major carload categories for Mexican railroads that logged decreases last month compared with July 2019 were stone, clay and glass products, down 9.2 percent; grain, down 13.1 percent; and crushed stone, sand and gravel, down 1.8 percent.
Five of 20 carload categories posted increases in July compared with a year ago, the fewest for any month since November 2018, the report states. Among those categories that posted increases was food products, which rose 6.1 percent.
For the first seven months of 2020, total Mexican railroads' carloads fell 9.9 percent.
Meanwhile, Mexican railroads' intermodal originations decreased 16.6 percent in July, the same as in June. The decline marked the fifth straight month of decreases. Year to date, intermodal originations fell 10.1 percent through July compared with the same period a year ago.
