AAR OKs Kelso Technologies' pressure relief valve for tank-car use

Association of American Railroads recently approved Kelso Technologies Inc.'s JS75 SRV 75-pound pressure relief valve for use on North American tank cars carrying non-hazardous commodities.

The low-profile, external valve is designed to avoid product contamination, and vent vapor/gases and liquids simultaneously to prevent back pressure. The small, lightweight valve also offers an unobstructed opening and flow aperture, and can be retrofitted to existing pressure-relief systems.

In November 2001, Kelso began a valve service trial involving 30 Union Tank Car Co.-built tank cars leased by Terra Industries Inc. One year later, AAR officials observed Kelso's analysis of five of the valves at a certified railroad repair shop.

On Jan. 21, AAR's Tank Car Committee began reviewing test results, and later recommended that the association approve the valve.

North American railroads and private fleet owners currently manage about 260,000 tank cars, according to a prepared statement.
