U.S. rail traffic for the week ending May 4 was 463,106 carloads and intermodal units, which was flat compared with the same week last year, according to Association of American Railroads data.
Total carloads for the week were 213,410, down 5.1%, while intermodal volume was 249,696 containers and trailers, up 4.9%.
Seven of the 10 carload commodity groups that AAR tracks every week posted an increase. They included petroleum and petroleum products, up 17.9%; miscellaneous carloads, up 24.5%; and grain, up 5.8%.
Commodity groups that posted decreases were coal, down 25%; nonmetallic minerals, -4.7%; and farm products excluding grain, and food, -4.5%.
Canadian railroads logged 94,801 carloads for the week, a 7.4% increase, and 76,026 intermodal units, a 5.7% increase. Mexican railroads posted 16,091 carloads, a 12.9% increase, and 11,767 intermodal units, a 13.3% increase.
For the first 18 weeks of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023:• U.S. railroads reported 8,373,031 carloads, containers and trailers, up 2.1%;• Canadian railroads reported 2,896,564 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.2%; and• Mexican railroads reported 544,209 carloads, containers and trailers, up 10.5%.
