Association of American Railroads recently named Robert VanderClute senior vice president for safety and operations, a department responsible for overseeing the rail industry's interchange standards, quality assurance programs, customer and environmental issues, and safety initiatives. He succeeds former Executive Vice President for Safety and Operations Chuck Dettmann, who retired in May.

For the past five years, VanderClute has served engineering and construction-management firm Parsons Brinckerhoff as vice president for rail.

He began his rail career with the New York Central Railroad and later served Amtrak for 27 years in various positions, including vice president of operations and chief operating officer.

"Bob has had an impressive career touching on all aspects of railroading," said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Hamberger in a prepared statement.
