U.S. railroads’ carloadings are inching up on a week-over-week basis, but remain way down year over year. During the year’s 23rd week ending June 13, they originated 261,956 carloads, up 0.6 from the previous week’s level and down 19 percent from the same 2008 week’s volume, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Intermodal volume totaling 189,508 units rose 0.4 percent from the previous week’s level, but dropped 17 percent year over year.

For the week, Canadian railroads reported 56,978 carloads, down 26.6 percent, and 39,081 intermodal loads, down 18.8 percent compared with totals from the same 2008 period. Mexican railroads reported 12,441 carloads, down 14.4 percent, and 4,762 trailers and containers, down 29 percent.
