U.S. railroads continue to increase traffic. During the week ending Aug. 19, the roads originated 342,328 carloads, up 1 percent, and 248,890 trailers and containers, up 4.8 percent compared with similar 2005 data, according to Association of American Railroads data.
Through 2006’s first 33 weeks, U.S. railroads’ carloads totaled 11.1 million units, up 1.5 percent, and intermodal loads totaled 7.7 million units, up 6.4 percent compared with 2005’s first 33 weeks. Total estimated volume of 1.1 trillion ton-miles rose 2.7 percent.
During the week ending Aug. 19, Canadian railroads boosted originated carloads 3.2 percent to 77,903 units and increased intermodal loads 7.3 percent to 47,427 units compared with the same 2005 week. Through 33 weeks, the roads originated 2.5 million carloads, down 1.3 percent, and 1.5 million trailers and containers, up 6 percent compared with similar 2005 data.
Meanwhile, Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V.’s total weekly carload volume of 11,603 units rose 0.4 percent and total intermodal volume of 4,576 units increased 14.3 percent compared with 2005’s 33rd week. The railroad’s year-to-date carloads totaled 371,700 units, down 5.2 percent, and intermodal loads totaled 128,584 units, down 5.7 percent compared with similar 2005 data.
