On June 10, U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) presented Association of American Railroads a James S. Cogswell Award for Industrial Security. From nearly 11,000 cleared contractors, DOD selected only 15 to receive the award.

"Our industry has implemented a security plan that is one of the most comprehensive developed by any industry, and this award stands as a tribute to both the thoroughness of that plan and the dedication with which it has been put into effect," said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger in a prepared statement.

DOD bases the award on:

• an overall security program under which a contractor routinely resolves problems independently and is responsive to National Industrial Security Program changes;

• active program support and involvement by management;

• a facility security officer's knowledge and professionalism;

• security review results from two consecutive audits;

• internal operating procedures that implement or exceed applicable National Industrial Security Program requirements;

• the number of security violations impacting system integrity;

• an effective and ongoing security education-awareness program; and

• Support for Department of Defense personnel security initiatives.

The award is named after late U.S. Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, who served as the first chief of the unified Industrial Security office, established in 1965.
