The Association of American Railroads' (AAR) Hazardous Materials Committee recently presented Mark Stehly the Holden-Proferock Award. The AAR periodically distributes the award, which recognizes career achievement in the hazardous materials field.

Assistant vice president of technical research, environment and development for BNSF Railway Co., Stehly has more than 29 years' experience in rail industry-related risk analysis, and energy, environment and hazardous materials issues.

The AAR honored Stehly for leading the association's Risk Management Working Committee and helping set safety standards for haz-mat-carrying tank cars weighing more than 263,000 pounds. He also sponsored development of three-dimensional plume modeling that became an industry standard and supported a corporate intern program.

The award is named after the late Roy Holden and Art Proferock. A former employee at the AAR's Bureau of Explosives, Holden is recognized as an industry leader for his work on tank-car damage assessment guidelines; a former Hulcher Emergency Services employee, Proferock is considered a pioneer in haz-mat emergency response.
