AAR report: Traffic remains down for U.S., Canadian railroads in March's second week

First, the good news: During the week ending March 14, U.S. railroads boosted carloads 1.5 percent vs. the previous week. Then, the bad: their carloads totaling 279,287 units declined 15 percent compared with traffic from the same week last year, according to the Association of American Railroads.
U.S railroads’ weekly intermodal volume, which totaled 176,840 units, plummeted 18.3 percent on a year-over-year basis.
For the week ending March 14, Canadian railroads reported carload volume of 59,612 units, down 21.4 percent, and intermodal volume of 39,073 units, down 11.3 percent compared with totals from the same week in 2008. Mexican railroads’ weekly carloads totaling 12,796 units rose 5.2 percent, but their intermodal volume totaling 4,700 units decreased 4.3 percent.
