AAR urges protection for railroads from loss of coal revenue

With various climate change proposals currently before Congress, lawmakers should consider enacting contingent allowances that would be made available to railroads that register less coal revenue because of federal climate change law, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Coal is the largest shipper segment for railroads, representing about 25 percent of total revenue for the nation’s Class Is. One in every five railroad jobs is related to coal movements, according to the AAR.

“Without coal, the U.S. rail network would face a need for vast restructuring with greatly reduced capacity to invest in the nation’s rail network infrastructure,” said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger in a prepared statement.
