U.S. railroads continued to notch traffic gains in October’s second full week, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR). During the week ending Oct. 16, they originated 303,664 carloads, up 10.1 percent, and 237,180 intermodal loads, up 15.1 percent compared with volumes from the same week last year.

Fourteen of 19 carload commodity groups registered gains, including metallic ores, which shot up 183.2 percent. In terms of intermodal traffic, container volume jumped 15.8 percent and trailer volume rose 11.1 percent.

For the week ending Oct. 16, Canadian railroads reported 77,728 carloads, up 12.3 percent, and 48,436 containers and trailers, up 16 percent year over year. Mexican railroads reported 14,332 carloads, up 16.8 percent, and 8,025 intermodal loads, up 14.2 percent.

Through 2010’s first 41 weeks, 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads originated 15.3 million carloads, up 9.8 percent, and 11.1 million containers and trailers, up 15.1 percent year over year.
