On Jan. 9, Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority (ACTA) named John Doherty director of construction and engineering to succeed Timothy Buresh, who resigned to take a position with Los Angeles Unified School District. Doherty will assume his new duties Feb. 3.
For the past seven years, Doherty has served as director of construction for ACTA joint venture Alameda Corridor Engineering Team.
He previously was a consultant on the Metrolink Commuter Rail Project, Honolulu Rapid Transit Development Project and California High Speed Rail Study. Doherty also served as vice president of operations for Long Island Rail Road, where he spent 24 years in various engineering, construction and operational positions.
He will be responsible for overseeing engineering design and construction management firms that ACTA hires, and ensuring work is done on time and within budget.
ACTA spent five years building the $2.4 billion, 20-mile Alameda Corridor, which opened in April 2002. Now, the agency plans to begin building the Pacific Coast Highway Grade Separation, a mile-long bridge designed to divert street traffic over corridor mainlines, branch lines and Alameda Street in the Los Angeles port community of Wilmington.
Within the next few months, ACTA plans to select a prime contractor for the project and start construction.
