With gas prices hitting — or topping — $4 a gallon, it’s no surprise that tourists are seeking ways to save money on their summer travels. One way they’ll do it? By riding public transit systems.

Thirty-five percent of vacationers plan to use public transit this summer, up 7 percent from last year, according to results from the American Public Transportation Association’s “Green Travel Forecast” survey.

Based on results from 68,000 adult survey takers, the top destinations and their projected public transit use among visitors includes: New York City (53 percent), Washington, D.C. (47 percent), Boston (48 percent), San Francisco (40 percent), Philadelphia (38 percent) and Chicago (35 percent).
