APTA develops public transit operation, maintenance standards

Yesterday, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) released more than 90 voluntary standards designed to help guide the operation and maintenance of rail transit systems.
Developed by more than 200 transit professionals during the past four years, the guidelines recommend ways transit agencies can improve safety, reduce costs and enhance service reliability.
"The use of standards makes good business sense," said APTA President William Millar in a prepared statement. "With the release of today’s rail transit standards, we expect the public transportation industry to come together, and broaden the overall acceptance and scope of the program."
APTA currently offers standards programs for commuter rail, transit bus, intelligent transportation systems and fare-collection systems.
