Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) President George Dixon III recently was nominated to chair the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

On Sept. 29, APTA expects to formally elect and swear in Dixon — who would be the first African-American male to serve as chairman — at the association’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

Since fall 2002, Dixon has served as APTA’s first vice chair. He also serves as vice chair of APTA’s governing boards committee and diversity council, and as a member of APTA’s executive committee. In addition, Dixon chairs an Oversight Panel to Funded Projects, Public Transit System Policy Board Organization and Characteristics for the Transportation Research Board, and is active in the Conference of Minority Transit Officials.

Dixon has served on GCRTA’s board since 1992, and as president since 1994.
