About 90 million Americans will travel to large U.S. cities this year, and one in every three of them will use public transportation after they arrive at their destination, according to results from a recent survey conducted by market research firm Synovate for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

APTA’s “Green Travel Forecast” comprises data obtained from a survey 33,000 adults, 28 percent of whom say they are more likely to use public transit during their vacations this summer than they were last year. Of those who will use public transportation, 62 percent cite lower fares compared with taxicabs and rental cars as their top reason.

The survey shows 48 percent of summer travelers visiting New York City will use public transit, followed by 46 percent in Washington, D.C.; 43 percent in Boston; 40 percent in San Francisco; 34 percent in Philadelphia; 31 percent in Chicago; and 30 percent in Seattle.
