ARCI: Rail-car orders, deliveries finished 2010 on high notes

Rail-car orders continued to climb in the fourth quarter, reaching 10,853 units vs. 9,194 units in the third quarter and 4,886 units in the second quarter, according to the American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee of the Railway Supply Institute. Orders had totaled 2,821 units in fourth-quarter 2009.

Fourth-quarter car deliveries jumped to 7,333 units vs. 3,706 units in the third quarter, 2,946 units in the second quarter and 2,550 units in the first quarter. In fourth-quarter 2009, deliveries totaled 3,467 units, according to ARCI.

Meanwhile, the car backlog as of Dec. 31, 2010, reached 22,658 units compared with the 19,267-unit backlog on Oct. 1, 14,930-unit backlog on July 1 and 12,990-unit backlog on April 1.

ARCI's quarterly statistics on orders, deliveries and backlogs include data on covered and open-top hoppers, gondolas, flat and tank cars, and articulated and non-articulated cars.
