In the third quarter, rail-car orders totaled 7,696 units, down 37 percent compared with second-quarter orders for 12,142 cars and 5 percent compared with third-quarter 2007 orders for 8,121 cars, according to data compiled by the Railway Supply Institute’s American Railway Car Institute Committee.

However, third-quarter deliveries totaling 16,445 units increased 11 percent vs. second-quarter deliveries and 9 percent vs. third-quarter 2007 deliveries.

The backlog — or cars ordered but not yet delivered — stood at 52,154 units on Oct. 1. The backlog previously reached 61,573 units on July 1, 65,223 units on April 1, 75,860 units on Dec. 31, 2007, and 67,000 units on Oct. 1, 2007.
