ASLRRA honors Panhandle Northern's Cotton as 'Safety Person of the Year'

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) recently named Panhandle Northern Railroad L.L.C. General Manager Sam Cotton the Safety Person of the Year.
Since joining the OmniTRAX Inc.-owned short line, Cotton has implemented several safety plans that “instilled a positive working environment among the railroad’s employees,” according to the ASLRRA. Taking time each day to “pat the guys on the back, letting them know they’ve done well” and recognizing workers’ performance is key, Cotton believes.
Cotton joined the rail industry 13 years ago after working as a lieutenant police officer for 15 years. He believes law enforcement provided him the necessary safety skills and administrative knowledge that he now relies on in the rail industry.
The ASLRRA plans to present the award to Cotton during its annual convention to be held May 1-4 in Orlando, Fla.
