ASLRRA pads online training program

American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) recently added an engineer re-certification program and 26 more courses to its online training program because of the program's success since its November launch, according to an item in the association's newsletter released Aug. 12.

Seventy-five member railroads now access the online training courses, involving more than 600 users.

The new courses cover topics such as general operating rules, freight car inspection, locomotive and mechanical instruction, roadway worker protection and maintenance of way.

ASLRRA officials believe the Federal Railroad Administration-approved re-certification course, which engineers are required to take every two years, is the first offered to railroads via the Internet.

Meanwhile, to attract online-course users, ASLRRA and insurance providers United Shortline Inc. and MARSH Inc. recently partnered to offer Railroad Safety Incentive Program, part of which offers qualifying railroads a 10 percent policy discount if all of a road's employees complete required courses.

Courses are available on the association's website at www.aslrra.org/what_we_do/safety_and_training/online_training_courses.cfm.
