The Alaska Railroad Corp.’s (ARRC) board recently appointed Christopher Aadnesen president and chief executive officer. He will assume the post later this month.

Aadnesen previously spent three years as CEO of Estonian Railways, where he focused on profitability, safety performance, real estate assets, and increased freight- and passenger-rail operations. His prior work history includes various senior positions with several railroads, including Union Pacific Railroad, Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana, The Texas Mexican Railway Co. and Houston’s Port Terminal Railroad Association.

“Aadnesen has proven leadership within the railroad industry, with nearly four decades of strategic management performance that demonstrate insightful business planning, as well as excellent labor relations, government and public communications skills,” said ARRC Chairman John Binkley in a prepared statement.

Chief Finance Officer Bill O’Leary has been serving as interim president and CEO since April 1. He provided time for former President and CEO Pat Gamble to transition to his new job as president of the University of Alaska system, which took effect June 1.
