Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
One week after Amtrak shut down Acela Express service because of cracks in many of the trains’ disc brake rotors, the national passenger railroad has announced service may not resume for several months.
The railroad is working with officials from Bombardier Transportation and ALSTOM, which built the high-speed trains, to develop a repair plan. The companies will create a revised inspection procedure, develop a brake disc life-cycle agreement and deliver a new supply of replacement discs.
"It is our hope that the manufacturer will be able to resolve these issues and that the Acelas will gradually return to service this summer," said William Crosbie, Amtrak’s senior vice president of operations, in a prepared statement.
In the meantime, Amtrak will replace Acela trains with Metroliners in most Washington, D.C.-to-New York City weekday time slots.
