Alcatel Transport Automation Solutions recently obtained a $523 million contract from Tube Lines to upgrade and maintain segments of the London underground.

Alcatel will install its SelTrac® communications-based train control system on the Jubilee and Northern lines during the next seven years. The contract also includes an option to re-signal the Piccadilly Line, which begins design in 2005.

Alcatel plans to begin work on the Jubilee and Northern lines immediately. The system is expected to be fully implemented on the 23-mile Jubilee Line by 2009 and on the 36-mile Northern Line by 2011.
