Allegheny Count port authority to open 2,200-space parking structure

Next week, the Port Authority of Allegheny County will open a seven-story, 2,200-space parking garage at the South Hills Village station.

The structure will provide light-rail passengers direct access to the renovated station via a covered pedestrian walkway, and a new passenger drop-off and pick-up area.

The parking garage is one of the final pieces of the port authority’s Stage II light-rail project, which included reconstructing the 5.2-mile Overbrook Line, purchasing 28 new light-rail vehicles, rebuilding several stations and adding park-and-ride lots.

In conjunction with the parking structure opening, the authority will begin operating additional rail service along the Overbrook Line, including a limited number of trips to and from South Hills Village. The authority will continue to expand service as it acquires rehabilitated vehicles.
