Alliance releases smart-card report

With many major U.S. transit agencies set to replace aging automatic fare-collection systems with smart card-based technology, the Smart Card Alliance recently released a white paper touting the technology’s advantages.

Entitle "Transit and Retail Payment: Opportunities for Collaboration and Convergence," the report details business interests and technological foundations that need to be aligned to enable transit operators, retailers and other companies to collaborate and gain efficiencies from the cards.

Available at www.smartcardalliance.org, the report addresses transit and retail payment viewpoints, examines the opportunity to converge a common card for transit and retail payment, and identifies and explores technical and commercial considerations.

Representatives from 13 organizations — including Cubic Transportation Systems Inc., U.S. Department of Transportation/Volpe Center and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority — helped develop the report.

The non-profit, multi-association alliance promotes the acceptance of smart-card technology.
