Alstom Transportation recently obtained two contracts totaling $460 million from the Chinese Ministry of Railways.
Under a $1.4 billion contract awarded to an Alstom/Datong Electric Locomotives consortium, Alstom will design and manufacture 500 “Co-Co” electric freight locomotives for the railway. Alstom, whose share totals $408 million, will manufacture the first 10 locomotives and supply components for the next 190 locomotives. Datong Electric Locomotives will produce the remaining vehicles.
Under the second contract, worth $55.2 million, Alstom will provide electrification equipment for the Shi-Tai high-speed rail line. The 117-mile line will connect the cities of Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan, enabling passengers to travel from Beijing to Taiyuan in three hours. Trains will operate at speeds up to 155 mph. Alstom will deliver the equipment between the end of 2007 and mid-2008.
