Alstom wins two rail electrification contracts in Greece

Greek national railway operator subsidiary ERGA OSE recently awarded Alstom two electrification contracts for the SKA-Kiato and Inoi-Halkida (Athens region) suburban lines.

As joint venture leader for the SKA-Kiato project, Alstom will design and install an overhead catenary line that’ll permit an operating speed of 99 mph (compared with the current 74 mph) on the 62-mile, double-tracked line. Under the pact, Alstom also will manage track maintenance for three years; J&P AVAX SA will provide the system’s electrical power supply. The line is scheduled to enter revenue service by mid-2009.

For the Inoi-Halkida project, Alstom will build an overhead catenary line that, when complete, will permit an operating speed of 74 mph (vs. 50 mph) over the 13.6-mile track. Alstom also will upgrade the electrification system; complete a fiber optic telecommunications interface; and, for two years, manage line maintenance. The project is scheduled for completion by first-quarter 2009.
