Amtrak holds off on fare increase

Amtrak has postponed a fare increase that was set to take effect Sept. 20 so the national passenger railroad can "conclude additional briefings with public officials and other interested groups," according to a prepared statement.

On Sept. 9, the railroad announced plans to raise fares an average of $3 nationally and $4 in the Northeast Corridor to help offset escalating fuel costs.
