Yesterday, Amtrak, city of Milwaukee and state of Wisconsin representatives officially opened the Milwaukee Intermodal Station.

An Amtrak station that first opened in 1965 has been renovated to feature a three-story, glass-enclosed “galleria,” new lobby area, a restaurant and space for retail businesses. The second and third floors also were renovated for new tenants, including a new State Traffic Operations Area.

Served by 16 Amtrak Hiawatha and Empire Builder trains daily, the facility now also will be served by Greyhound and several other bus lines.

Construction on the $17 million renovation project began in 2006. The project was funded by the federal government, city, state and Milwaukee Intermodal Partners, which is managing the facility.
