Amtrak selects firms to redevelop Chicago's historic Union Station
advertisement
Amtrak recently selected real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle and joint venture partner Youssefi-Scott Development Co. to redevelop Chicago’s Union Station, which is owned by Amtrak subsidiary Chicago Union Station Co.
Built in 1925, the station originally was designed to be a high-rise structure. Jones Lang LaSalle and Youssefi-Scott Development plan to preserve the historic building’s elevations, rooflines and Great Hall — including a 300-foot-long barrel-vaulted skylight — and construct an 18-story tower. The project will cost about $250 million.
The redevelopment plan also includes constructing offices, a hotel/conference center, condominiums and retail space.
The station serves 120,000 Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) and 6,000 Amtrak passengers daily. Redevelopment plans don’t include the passenger concourse, ticketing area and train platforms, which were renovated in 1991.
