Amtrak to replace ties, rail on Philadelphia-area corridor

On May 7, Amtrak will launch a six-month trackwork project between Philadelphia and Paoli, Penn., that will enable both Amtrak and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to raise train speeds along the corridor — SEPTA’s busiest route.

To be funded by SEPTA, the project includes installing 80,000 concrete ties and 60 miles of continuous-welded rail. The project is a continuation of Amtrak’s Keystone Corridor upgrades that began in 2002. In October 2006, Amtrak launched electric service along the corridor.
