More than a month after Hurricane Katrina forced Amtrak to suspend several long-distance trains’ New Orleans operations, the trains are coming back to the city. On Oct. 9, the national passenger railroad will resume service on the New Orleans leg of the City of New Orleans and Crescent services.

City of New Orleans trains will depart the Big Easy and travel to Memphis and Chicago; Crescent trains will depart New Orleans and travel to Atlanta and New York City.

The storm damaged the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and Amtrak facilities, as well as rail lines owned by Canadian National Railway Co. and Norfolk Southern Railway — which Amtrak Crescent and City of New Orleans trains operate over.

Amtrak still has not restored service to New Orleans on the Sunset Limited, which operates between Los Angeles and Orlando. The railroad plans to restore service to the west through Houston and Beaumont, Texas, later this year, but service to the east through Biloxi, Miss., and Mobile, Ala., will not restart until 2006 because CSX Transportation’s line is severely damaged.
