The good news: the Transportation Services Index (TSI) held steady at 110.7 in April. The bad news: the index didn't make any headway after posting declines in February and March, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

However, the TSI — a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire freight and passenger transportation industries — did rise 0.3 percent compared with April 2007's levl. In addition, the index posted a year-over-year gain during 2008's first four months.

April's Freight TSI of 109.4 also remained unchanged from March's level. A measure of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire rail, trucking, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight companies, the index inched up from April 2007's total of 109.3.

April's Passenger TSI of 116.2 held steady vs. March, too. A measure of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire air, local transit and intercity rail providers, the index increased 1.3 percent compared with April 2007's level.

Meanwhile, BTS announced it has issued a new technical report explaining the TSI, "BTS Technical Report: Transportation Services Index and the Economy." The report can be downloaded at https://www.bts.gov/pdc/index.xml in BTS' online bookstore.
