Arizona cities gear up for Valley Metro light-rail opening later this year

Phoenix's Valley Metro won't open its new light-rail system until late December. But the city of Tempe — one of three major cities that will be served by the 20-mile line — already has planned a series of special events for the occasion, such as a grand opening celebration, light-rail station tour, block party and marathon.
The cities of Phoenix and Mesa also will hold events to commemorate the opening, scheduled for Dec. 27-31.
Valley Metro began building the $1.4 billion, 28-station line in 2005. The agency has proposed building extensions to serve Mesa and Glendale, as well as building lines to the northwest, northeast and along the I-10 corridor.
